We’re looking for Fellows who are interested in taking on the position of Resident Fellow at VCCA’s Moulin à Nef location in Auvillar, France, during our 2025 residency season. We will schedule three Resident Fellows to stay for just under 90 days each (the period allowed to stay in France and the Schengen Area without acquiring a long-stay visa; additional travel authorization requirements may be implemented in 2025).

The dates for these opportunities are:

  • March 17 – June 5, 2025
  • June 9 – August 25, 2025
  • September 1 – November 21, 2025

Resident Fellows need to be fluent enough in French to handle emergency situations and be able to help Fellows in residence with communication, making reservations, purchases, etc. The Resident Fellow will live in the Cloucado apartment above the office and work in the office/small studio in the apartment. The Resident Fellow would join the four Fellows for the two meals provided per week, usually Mondays and Wednesdays.

This residency opportunity would be in exchange for assistance with tasks in the running of the Moulin à Nef. Tasks and hours are variable, and we would be respectful of the number of hours worked, being sure that you have time to dedicate yourself to your practice. Transportation to and from France is not included. Arrival and departure transportation to/from the Toulouse Blagnac airport, the Agen train station, or the Valence d’Agen train station is included.

Examples of tasks/responsibilities that you would be asked to take on:

  • Act as emergency on-call person when there is no staff on site, including evenings and weekends.
  • Assist with arrival and departure shuttles with VCCA’s Toyota Prius, an automatic vehicle. A valid driver’s license is needed.
  • Help Fatiha prepare the Monday and Wednesday dinners, including serving and clean up. Assist with open studios and presentations, including invitations, promotion, set up, refreshments, and clean up.
  • Accept deliveries/parcels when the office is closed.
  • Be responsible for putting out and taking in the recycling and garbage bins on the appropriate schedule.
  • Assist with various tasks when staff are on vacation. Possible duties could include going to the market with Fellows, holding office hours, preparing meals, and doing housekeeping.
  • Tend to light garden/outdoor work, including sweeping the outdoor terrace and steps, watering planters, etc.

If you are interested in this opportunity, please submit your application via SlideRoom by January 15, 2025. If you have questions, contact the Moulin à Nef Resident Director Cheryl Fortier at cfortier@vcca.com.

Testimonials from Resident Fellows

“Staying at the Moulin à Nef as a Resident Fellow was an incredibly enriching and rewarding experience. Not only did I get plenty of time to do my own work — I was on deadline and completed a book while I was there! — I also felt truly lucky to be part of the team. It was fun helping to make sure that things ran smoothly and that Fellows felt welcome and supported. This is a slightly different take on the idea of a residency that I really valued. And my French definitely improved!” Sarah Goodyear

“Living in Auvillar for two months was an incredible opportunity. Working with Cheryl, Fatiha, Geraldine, Sabine, and John gave me a broader perspective on the residency and the various responsibilities. I came away with admiration and deep respect for all the people there. Overall, being a Resident Fellow at VCCA’s Moulin à Nef was a great opportunity, recommended to anyone interested in spending time in Auvillar and getting to work with the terrific staff.” Justin Kim
