As part of Amherst Glebe Arts Response to the National Endowment for the Arts’ BIG READ, actress and playwright Royal Shiree will premiere Hurston and Spencer: A Poetic Tale of Two Renaissance Women. Royal’s one-act play focuses of the lives, works, and relationship of Harlem Renaissance poet Anne Spencer and novelist and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston, whose masterwork, Their Eyes Were Watching God is the subject of THE BIG READ. Royal will perform all roles on the garden stage of the Anne Spencer House and Garden Museum on the afternoon of September 27, the museum’s fall open house.
Royal will also emcee the Zora Neale Hurston at the Third Annual Pierce Street Harlem Renaissance Festival parade and stage events on Sunday September 14. http://www.amherstglebeartsresponse.org/the-big-read.html
