VCCA Exchange Program

VCCA is pleased to offer residencies at many locations around the world as well as residencies at our Mt. San Angelo facility in central Virgina. We are continually developing relationships with international residency programs to broaden the perspectives and opportunities for VCCA Fellows.

Writers, visual artists, and composers who have been in residence at VCCA may apply for an international residency. Fellows who have participated in a VCCA international residency program in the last 3 years (2014, 2015, 2016) are NOT eligible to apply, with the exception of those who have participated in the Moulin à Nef program in France.

You may apply for as many programs as you like. Each requires a separate application and fee. Please note that if you are selected for multiple programs, you will have to choose one program to attend.

When to Apply

Deadline for applying is December 1. Notificaiton in early February.

Residency Cost

The suggested daily contribution for internation­al residencies is $54. Reductions are granted when a true need is demonstrated.

Applications can be made using SlideRoom starting October 1 each year.

If you prefer to apply using a hard copy applicaiton one is available here. Each program that you apply for will require a separate application and fee. For the paper application submit one copy of the application, one copy of requested work samples, résumé, self-addressed stamped envelope for return of work sample, and $40 application fee for each resi­dency requested. All information should be submitted in English.


International Exchange Programs for 2017 

Oberpfälzer Künstlerhaus in Schwandorf, Germany

Each of the four residency opportunities is for six-weeks in June through mid-July at the Oberpfälzer Künstlerhaus, in the town of Schwandorf in southern Germany. Fellows are housed in the Künstlerhaus, which features private rooms, a shared living area and kitchen. A stipend of 12,50€ a day is provided.


Tyrone Guthrie Centre in County Monaghan, Ireland

1 Fiction Writer

A one-month residency at Annaghmakerrig, the former estate of Sir Tyrone Guthrie, seventy miles from Dublin.  The Centre provides a residential program similar to the VCCA providing artists with private studios and prepared meals in the company of other visiting artists.


City of Salzburg, Austria

1 Visual Artist

A six-week residency from August through mid-September. The residency is a cultural exchange with the city of Salzburg, which provides a combined studio and living space and a stipend of 850€ in the Künstlerhaus.  Knowledge of the German language is helpful, but not essential. The Künstlerhaus is the center of the city and houses twenty-two artist studios, and two other residential space. The experience can be somewhat solitary and Fellows are encouraged to bring a friend or partner with them and to inform themselves about the city before they arrive.


Fondazzjoni Kreattività in Gozo, Malta

A two-week residency on the Mediterranean island of Gozo (part of the Maltese archipelago) between September 1, 2017 - January 1, 2018. In addition to time to focus on your own work, Fellows will participate in a public workshop or presentation to be arranged in conjunction with Fondazzjoni Kreattività. The residency includes housing (with a full kitchen) and studio space, as well as a daily stipend of 25 euros, airport transfers to/from the Gozo residence on arrival/departure. Fellows will be assisted by the Fondazzjoni Kreattività staff in planning and coordinating the project development, logistics as well as the visit itinerary. Gozo is a secluded island and the trip to and from Valetta (Malta's capitol) takes several hours. The solitary aspects of the residency allow for concentrated work. 


Schloss Plüschow in Mecklenburg, Germany

A four-week residency in April in a residential studio facility near the Baltic Sea. VCCA Fellows enjoy a large studio and adjacent studio apartment with bathroom and kitchen facilities in a 17th century chateau housing other artists’ studios. Fellows are responsible for their own shopping and meals. A car is not necessary but helpful. It is close to the port city of Wismar and easy driving distance from the shore. There is a local train station with connections to Hamburg, Lübeck, and Berlin. The solitary aspects of the residency allow for concentrated work. You may arrange for a friend or partner to stay with you for a small fee.
